Interested in training to become a medical assistant but unsure which program to choose?
South Texas Vocational Technical Institute’s (STVT) Brownsville and Weslaco campuses offer a Medical Assisting program and a Medical Administrative Assisting Technology program. Although these programs help prepare students for careers in healthcare, there are some similarities and differences. Both programs provide anatomical and administrative training to prepare students to navigate tasks in healthcare offices. They also explore the ethical standards of communication such as maintaining patient confidentiality and following HIPAA regulations. In addition, they offer guidance on how to communicate effectively with patients and other staff members.
The main difference between these programs lies in the tasks being performed. Our Medical Assisting program prepares students to handle clinical tasks such as taking vital signs and administering medications. Our Medical Administrative Assisting Technology program on the other hand, prepares students to handle more administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments and managing patient records.
The reason why I chose STVT was, of course, like anybody else – to benefit my future and to work hard for my children. It appealed to me because I was able to work hands-on and that’s the kind of learner that I am.

Career Services was outstanding at STVT. The school has a good rapport with a lot of these companies – so these companies are more often willing to work with the school and to take on students because they know the quality of education that we receive here at STVT.
